This is my go-to recipe for pot lucks and picnics. Can be made with chicken or shrimp or you could leave meat out entirely and just enjoy the veggies and noodles

Cold-Weather Cooking
By Sarah Leah Chase
Workman Publishing Company - 1990
This is just half a recommendation. I don't make the cake but I do make the rum sauce to put on my own favorite Brown Sugar pecan pound cake and it's delicious

This is an unusual apple pie recipe - recommended to be served the following day. When I make it I use the cardamom. Only negative is that I have never been able to fit that many apples into even my deep 10 inch pie pan.

These are delicious - directions are easy to follow. I think these might live up to my Grandmothers.
Shirley Corriher said she once got a standing ovation for them at an international food conference in Sicily.

Moosewood Restaurant Book of Desserts (Moosewood Collection)
By Moosewood Collective
Three Rivers Press - 1997
this is a good reliable recipe for chocolate cake (and if you are deep into chocolate, add the chocolate ganache from page 314 - which is also a reliable recipe

This is a wonderful cake - with orange juice, orange peel and orange juice concentrate, it is wonderfully fresh tasting. They recommend orange frosting but I often put the chocolate ganache on it (pg 314). And if you want a really special cake - check out pages 90-91 to use this cake to make Cassata - really delicious.

Should be clear here - there isn't anything wrong with this recipe. It reliably makes this cake - which is neither Italian or especially creamy. It is a southern favorite and like many southern desserts, too sweet for my taste. The cream cheese frosting (pg 89) benefits from a generous squeeze of lemon juice but I am not enough of a chemist to know if I could take out some of the sugar without destroying the texture. But if you like your cake really sweet - this will meet the need. (contains pecans and coconut)

This is a very easy and good recipe for chocolate chip oatmeal cookies - makes a lot if you are feeding a crowd.

The New England Cookbook: 350 Recipies from Town and Country, Land and Sea, Hearth and Home
By Brooke Dojny

I am a gingerbread aficionado so I have lots of recipes, many of them excellent but this is one of my favorites. The title says it all - it is indeed dark and sticky. the recipes comes with a sherried foamy sauce but I have never tried it because this one cries for whipped cream.

Take Two & Butter 'em While they're Hot
By Barbara Swell
Native Ground Music, Inc - 1998
This is a great recipe. Makes three good size braided loaves. I do find, however, that it turns out better if I mix it entirely by hand.

This is somewhere between a bread and a fruitcake but it is truly delicious - you get to pick the mix of fruits - I like it with dates, apricots, dried cranberries and cherries and pineapple. Keeps well.

The Yellow Farmhouse Cookbook
By Christopher Kimball
Little, Brown and Company - 1998
I cannot believe that I am recommending tuna noodle casserole but this isn't the version with the canned onions on top. This is delicious with fresh mushrooms, parmesan cheese and a bit of sherry. The basic recipe is the master recipe for noodle casserole and they recommend turkey or chicken but you should try it with tuna at least once to prove that a tuna noodle casserole is actually edible.

Their basic recipe for meat loaf is excellent - I sometimes mess with it by adding a few things but made following the directions exactly, it will always produce an excellent result.
