My Two Souths: Blending the Flavors of India into a Southern Kitchen
By Asha Gomez, Martha Hall Foose
Running Press - 2016
Banana Beignets : page 146
Thursday night I was craving something sweet. I realized I had everything to make the these. They were delicious. Was a little leery of the white pepper in the confectioners sugar but it worked great with the nutmeg and other ingredients. I'll be making these again. Hubby and son enjoyed them as well.

Blueberry Lime Muffins : page 41
We all loved these except hubby who doesn't enjoy cooked blueberries in any form. Son-in-law enjoyed them so much he asked for a second one and I sent him and daughter home with a few for later. I ended up with 16 instead of 12. Also had to bake for about 15 minutes longer than suggested in book.

Cardamom Cornbread : page 77
We didn't like this bread by itself but it was delicious topped by the Southern Style Pork Vindaloo and Green Bean Verakka.

Cinnamon Biscuit Bramble Cobbler and Cream : page 240
We enjoyed this version of cobbler although we like the one I usually make a bit better. I wish I gotten more cream since I only had enough for the dough and not some for adding when eating. My grandma always served some sweetened cream or milk with her blackberry dumplings and we loved it. I did use almond flavoring in place of the amaretto since I'd forgotten to get some.

Country Ham Smothered Cabbage : page 192
I love cooked cabbage and this version was delicious. I only made half recipe for two since hubby and I were the only ones eating. I made some cornbread fritters to eat with this and it made a perfect meal. Loved the buttermilk gravy and if I make again I'd do a whole recipe of it even if I halved the cabbage part.

Cream Cheese Icing : page 257
This cream cheese icing was delicious and unusual in that it contains black peppercorns ground, cloves and cardamon. It made the carrot cake from page 254 a little less dry. Not sure why a bit dry since it contained 9 eggs as well as over a cup of canola oil.

Cream Cheese Pie Crust : page 39
Loved this crust with the tomato pie. I made a whole recipe so I'd have one crust to put in my freezer. Can't wait to try it with our favorite tomato pie recipe from Roy Finamore.

Fresh Thyme Fish Cakes : page 80
My family had mixed reviews about these. Son said they were different. I though they were pretty good. Hubby ate them but didn't say anything. I made a half recipe. They were hard to keep together when I was trying to dip in egg white and then into panko. I was in a hurry and didn't let them sit in fridge for 30 minutes after forming and dipping. They did manage to stay together while pre frying before baking in oven. They got a little browner then I would have liked but didn't check them and left the whole 20 minutes in oven. Glad I tried them but probably wouldn't be something I'd make again.

Green Bean Verakka : page 76
Really enjoyed these green beans even son liked and son in law too. Hubby was only one who didn't like them. He said be better cooked longer. They went great on top of the cardamon cornbread p 77 and Pork Vindaloo p 76.

Marcus's Turkey Kheema Sloppy Joes : page 171
Daughter and I enjoyed this twist of adding garam masala to sloppy joes.

Quick Tellicherry Buttermilk Biscuits : page 49
I made these biscuits for our Sunday breakfast. They are quick and easy and I had all ingredients on hand as I always have butter, buttermilk, self-rising flour and tellicherry peppercorns. Son fried us some country ham and we had it in the biscuits. I also added some peach jam in mine with the ham. Hubby, son and I all thought these biscuits were great. My daughter ate a cold one with her supper tonight and said they were really good. I followed the recipe and it worked perfectly. I actually got 9 biscuits instead of 8 but that's because I just hate to waste scraps so I rolled the last bits in my hand and made another smaller biscuit. I did have to bake mine a bit longer to get them nicely browned but it was my oven and not a recipe problem.

Roasted Garlicky Potato Salad : page 201
Made for son and I. We really enjoyed it. I only used the zest of one large lemon though. Thought I had more but didn't and it calls for three. Son said he thought it would be overwhelming had I used three.

Smoky Hazelnut Chocolate Cookies : page 246
I couldn't wait to try these cookies since they contained Nutella. Had a hard time finding the hazelnuts called for. I ended up buying a big bag of mixed nuts and picking out the 1/4 cup I needed for the recipe. It was all of them in the bag. These cookies get their smoky flavor from smoked paprika. I love cookies warm from the oven but was disappointed when I tried these that way but they were much better once completely cooled. My family enjoyed them as well except for son who doesn't care for chocolate. Recipe says makes 10 but I got 19 using a small cookie scoop. I had to bake mine longer that the instructions said to get them done.

All these recipes together made a delicious meal. Everyone enjoyed but hubby.

Three Spice Carrot Cake : page 254
While this cake was very good it wasn't quiet as good as another carrot cake I've tried. The spices were an interesting touch. They were freshly ground black pepper, cardamon and cloves. The cream cheese icing also had the same spices from page 257.

Turmeric Turkey Potpie : page 178
I wasn't sure hubby would like this one due to the addition of garam masala, turmeric and chili flakes. He loved it. Daughter and I enjoyed it too but she said and I agree our southern version is a bit better. I make a homemade biscuit type crust for mine. This one calls for puff pastry. Mine wasn't browning good after the 30 minutes called for so I bumped up the heat for another 15 min and it was nicely browned. I had a small turkey in freezer so I cooked that and made some homemade broth as well for the pot pie.

Vivid Tomato and Cheese Pie : page 196
Continuing on my quest of trying new to us tomato pies. This was a very good version using ricotta and Manchego cheeses. We also loved the cream cheese crust from this book with it.
