Apples with a little cake - I loved it. It was a lovely golden color with a very moist crumb - almost like bread pudding. I used a variety of apples and the flavor was wonderful.
Because I was making this for a crowd and I wasn't sure if everyone would appreciate the custard-y quality of this cake, I made it using a little more flour and baking powder (as suggested in reviews on Epicurious). I also cut the apples in slices rather than chunks which made for a more even cake top. It was fantastic even though I only had Granny Smiths.
