Recipe Review
Sovay from Northern England,
I don't have the time, space or equipment for serious home wine-making; I keep this book mainly for sentimental reasons, as it belonged to my dad and is full of his comments (he made a particularly fine elderflower wine).
However, in pursuit of my goal to make something from every recipe book I own, I have decided to make Orange Gin, which couldn't be simpler - take some gin, add sugar and zest of lemon and orange (I've been waiting till now for the Seville orange season for extra aroma), steep for a week then strain and mature for two years.
No star rating yet as I shan't be able to assess the flavour until January 2015.
eta - it is now June 2015 and I have discovered the orange gin at the back of the cupboard and tried it. It's a lot like Southern Comfort; I like it, but it's less distinctively orangey than I expected. Definitely a liqueur rather than an aperitif - very sweet - and would benefit from a shot of lemon juice at the point of drinking (or, of course, Seville orange juice when available).
