Old-Fashioned Chocolate Layer Cake from Perfect Cookies, Cakes and Chocolate

This cake was pretty dry, but the frosting was incredible! I would definitely use the frosting on another cake. read more >

All Cakes Considered

By Melissa Gray
Chronicle Books - 2009

July 10th, 2011

I've made 4 cakes from this book so far, and all have been raved about (well, we haven't tried #4 yet, but it looks good!). The book is designed for you to work your way through it, learning new skills as you go. The first recipe is for a basic pound cake, and she walks you through it step by step. Experienced bakers would probably find this to be overkill, but for new cake bakers such as myself, it was very valuable, and I now feel like I know the tricks to making a cake turn out right every time.

Williams-Sonoma Essentials of Grilling: Recipes and techniques for successful outdoor cooking

By Melanie Barnard
Oxmoor House - 2006

I've only had this book for a few weeks, but it is fantastic! The thing I like most is that for each recipe it gives both charcoal and gas grilling instructions, side by side. This was exactly what I was looking for!

There is also excellent information on grilling methods, cuts of meat, and equipment.

We were struggling to find the right timing and techniques since buying our new gas grill, and everything we have grilled since getting the book has been done almost perfectly! Highly recommended!
