About me: I've embarked on a mission to cook something new from every cookery book I own - currently 260 - and am planning to use my account here to keep track (thanks to rfb from Librarything for tipping me off to the existence of this site). I've made a couple of rules for myself: to cook the recipe as given, with no substitution or variation unless suggested by the author; and to try to pick a genuinely new dish from each book - in other words, as I've cooked many Leek and Potato Soups in my time, I don't get to count Leek and Potato Soup as a new dish just because I haven't used this specific recipe before (unless it has really significant differences from the usual versions).

Baked Spiced Aromatic Plums : page 130

This is the recipe I most often cook from this book, and is basically Plums in Mulled Wine. It makes a good alternative to Christmas Pudding as it has the appropriate spiciness but is a much lighter finale to a heavy meal (my family usually has the Christmas Pudding on Boxing Day, following a less substantial main course). Spices can be adjusted to taste - I usually omit the star anise and add the zest of half an orange (and sometimes the juice as well - this makes for a nice flavour but clouds the juices). I also prefer to add the cinnamon in stick form rather than ground.

South Beach Black Bean Soup : page 92

This made a pretty good soup - I felt it didn't have quite enough body to start with so processed a few of the beans along with the onion and pepper &c. I shall probably make it again and may try adding a little cocoa (about a level teaspoon) for greater depth of flavour.
