About me: I love cooking, I love eating, I love discovering new recipes. I have so many cookbooks I sometimes lose track of which recipe is where - though this site helps a bit. I have gone low-carb in 2010, so that's different recipes to explore again. This also means I may not agree with my own reviews anymore if they were written in 2009 or before. ------------------ I have a lovely husband and ten-year old twins who also love eating. ----------------- You can also find me on LibraryThing, BookMooch and EatYourBooks, using the same handle.

Daond Pasha (Meatballs with Pine Nuts and Tomatoes) from The Complete Meze Table

The meatballs were very tasty, but I did not really like putting all the pine nuts together - it made for fussy cooking and I think I would prefer finding a pine nut here and there instead of finding them... read more >

The Frugal Gourmet on Our Immigrant Ancestors: Recipes You Should Have Gotten from Your Grandmother

By Jeff Smith

Easy, tastes good, looks great (although my daughter asked "Why did you use a highlighter on the cauliflower?").

Cauliflower fried in butter : page 417

Quite tasty.

A winter dish, even though all the ingredients are available year-round. In summer frying in olive oil is better.

Cuban ropa vieja : page 111

Robust everyday fare. Pretty good, but not brilliant.

Eggs in oil with sumac : page 290

A very nice variation of the fried egg.

Korean Spinach Side Dish : page 270

A nice way with spinach, I don't know how fireproof his kids are, but mine did find it a bit spicy. Replacing the red pepper threads with red bell pepper helped. A few drops of lemon juice improves the dish as well.

Kuku eggplants : page 351

This was easy to make and very tasty. Do make sure the eggplant is not just browned but done as well, as it doesn't really cook any more once it is added to the eggs.

Kuku sabzi : page 350

Very nice, but not as nice as the kuku eggplant on the next page.

Do serve with yogurt, as indicated. It needs a bit of acidity to show its full flavor.

It needed more time on the stove than given in the recipe.
I used a teaspoon of ground coriander, and that worked well.
I thought the amount of salt indicated was a bit much, so I decreased it. Next time I will only use a third of it.

Latvian Herring Salad : page 282

A very basic, very good herring salad.

Horseradish can be replaced by mustard.
