A simple soup prepared with easily found ingredients - made interesting with Indian spices.
Hail and snow - after several days in the 70's - made me reluctant to shop for dinner. I scoured my freezer, and found pre-cooled barley and chicken stock, and looked for a soup without mushrooms (in deference to 13daughter). This seemed to fit the bill - onions, carrots, garlic, and ginger, plus turmeric and garam marsala - and of course the chicken stock and barley.
My soup was rather thick, and a lovely bright yellow color. The flavor seemed like a surprise, and it was good with a slice of toast.

Powerful strong flavors in this pesto really work! The beautiful garlic scapes at the farmer's market were so appealing, I purchased some without knowing what I'd do with them. This recipe seemed like just the ticket. Garlic scapes are blended with almonds, olive oil, and Parmesan cheese. I served this on bow-tie pasta.
As I tasted the pesto to adjust the flavoring, and was amazed at the strong and peppery flavor. However, everyone, including the teenagers, really enjoyed it.
Garlic scapes are a fleeting spring food - grab some up - you will enjoy this dish.
