50 Great Curries of India
By Camellia Panjabi, Peter Knab
Kyle Cathie - 2004
I actually have the 1995 softcover edition of this book with slightly different graphics. Among other things, the background to the photo is red.
Above all else, this book is visual delight. Most pages have a gorgeous sidebar with prints of various textiles from India, and the photos are all richly and carefully composed with vivid colour and exotic accessories.
Panjabi includes some great background information on the various spices and lesser-known ingredients, and the curry recipes include some unusual ones such as watermelon curry. She also does a favour and proposes a variety of menu plans at the back of the book.
The recipes themselves are a bit complex and will undoubtedly require a shopping trip to your local Indian spice shop. Panjabi doesn't seem to make any concessions to tradition!
The Top One Hundred Pasta Sauces
By Diane Seed, Robert Budwig
Ten Speed Press - 2004
Two words: rustic beauty.
First of all, the hand-drawn illustrations make each page into a visual treat. It's full of original and simple Italian recipes, using very basic ingredients with an emphasis on freshness.
The book is broken down by main ingredient into multiple sections, and each one begins with a bit of trivia about that particular ingredient or memories of a recipe that the author had in a particular region of Italy.
I love this cookbook.
