Vegetables
By Beverley Sutherland Smith
Viking Australia - 1994
Every recipe is preceded by a little anecdote or commentary. It is this side of the EVO Watershed, and dates from the time when vegetables were liberated from the vegetarian ghetto and started to be taken seriously by people who also like meat.
You could construct a three course meal from this book, or just find an interesting veg to go with with your grilled steak.
Vegetarian Epicure
By Anna Thomas
Vintage - 1972
A classic, dating from the era when vegetarian food was just catching on outside the hippie communes. A beautifully designed volume, with not bad recipes.
Vegetarian Epicure Book Two (Book 2)
By Anna Thomas
Knopf - 1978
Like its predecessor, a very attractive book. The author purports to go international, but I'm not sure where she found some of the recipes.
Very Simple Food
By Jill Dupleix
Hardie Grant Publishing - 2000
Some of the recipes are more like suggestions, but everything I have tried works. Good for when you need inspiation.
Virginia Hill's Learn to Microwave
By Virginia Hill
Viking - 1994
Many of the recipes are disgusting, but it's a handy guide to general technique and timing..
A Year of Good Eating: The Kitchen Diaries III
By Nigel Slater
Fourth Estate - 2015
I do like Nigel Slater. His writing is wonderful and his attitude to food eminently sensible; beware of fads, eat what you fancy but don't overindulge in any one thing, above all enjoy your food!
The book is arranged seasonally like the previous two volumes, but the recipes are more in the simple style of Eat. As usual he encourages the reader to adapt and vary his ideas. "I bring you suggestions, not rules."
