About me: I love cooking, I love eating, I love discovering new recipes. I have so many cookbooks I sometimes lose track of which recipe is where - though this site helps a bit. I have gone low-carb in 2010, so that's different recipes to explore again. This also means I may not agree with my own reviews anymore if they were written in 2009 or before. ------------------ I have a lovely husband and ten-year old twins who also love eating. ----------------- You can also find me on LibraryThing, BookMooch and EatYourBooks, using the same handle.

Daond Pasha (Meatballs with Pine Nuts and Tomatoes) from The Complete Meze Table

The meatballs were very tasty, but I did not really like putting all the pine nuts together - it made for fussy cooking and I think I would prefer finding a pine nut here and there instead of finding them... read more >

Good, different from other squash soups, just not brilliant.

Cauliflower in tomato curry : page 107

A simple, mild but tasty curry. Vegan. I would put a bit more spices in, but I like my spices outspoken.

In my experience, the amount given will not serve more than 4 people, but maybe it will if you add some of the accompaniments given.

The time needed to make this recipe is 40-45 minutes, not 30.

Couscous-quinoa tabouli : page 6

Fragrant and with a little crunch. Another lovely quinoa recipe.

I served this with the Simplest Tomato Salad of the same book. Good combination. I will also try combining it with roasted chick peas.

First toast the spices while cooking the grains, as they need to go into the warm grains. Everything else you can do either while cooking the grains or while cooling them.
The food processor will "take" the herbs better if you add the oil and lemon juice as well.

Fantastic Bulgur Dish : page 93

Nice but a bit plain.

Simple, and a great combination of flavors and textures.

I dried the tofu before cooking it, and I used quite a bit more than "a drizzle" of oil, so it would crisp up nicely. To make the recipe child-proof, I left out the red pepper flakes and served hot sauce with it for the adults.

Magic Carrot Flans : page 122

These tasted good, not like the vegetarian option at all. They looked fine too, although the colors were the other way round than the book said: the outside was rust-colored and the inside was creamy yellow. However, somehow the taste was too robust for the dainty texture. Still, they would be good for festive times with vegetarians.

The au bain marie was not difficult, but it did need a much higher temperature than the book said. In the end, I put it on 400F because it did not even begin to set on 350F.

I needed just under 2 kilo of carrots to get the required amount of juice.

Sesame Stars : page 206

The children loved making these, and eating them.
I halved the amount given, and it still was two baking sheets full.

Simplest Tomato Salad : page 7

As the book itself says: a minimalist recipe for enhancing tomatoes' natural brilliance. You do need very good tomatoes for this, but it does make them just that bit better, a fuller, "meatier", flavor.
