Keralan Veggie Curry with Poppadoms, Rice & Minty Yoghurt from Jamie's 15-Minute Meals

The dish itself, the flavours, at least how I made it, that's a solid four star rating - it was delicious! Everything else - the time management, the style of writing, the layout, - oh, and did I mention... read more >

Salmon with Wasabi Mayonnaise : page 83

Really weird recipe, and very hard to review.

30g of wasabi powder is an enormous amount - I wonder if it was a typo and should be 3g instead. Japanese mayonnaise isn't actually any different from normal mayonnaise, or at least doesn't taste very different at all - it's just a pity that we had to spend 5 euro to find that out. Together - well I don't know if you can imagine how the wasabi and mayonnaise taste combined, but it's just really, really weird, in a very unpleasant way. We made three different versions until we found one that was edible in terms of hotness (but still pretty nasty in taste).

The orange caramel sauce was quite nice - I didn't notice much of the orange when I ate the salmon (and the salmon, by the way, was great as salmon usually is), but it worked surprisingly well with the rice. You can serve the orange caramel just as well with ice cream, though. Personally, I'm not a fan of the orange zest, I find it too strong, but it looks beautiful.

I didn't dare to try our own concoction of the wasabi mayonnaise in combination with the salmon and the orange caramel sauce - the wasabi mayonnaise on it's own was unpleasant enough and I didn't want to spoil my meal. DH did, though, and he reported that he felt irritated that the salmon, orange and mayonnaise (he didn't taste any of the wasabi) actually combined pretty well.

Also: minus points for depicting ingredients that weren't actually in the recipe.

Edited the next day:
Nah, I definitely didn't like the addition of whatever kind of mayonnaise. The best thing was the salmon, but that wasn't a merit of this specific recipe.
