Pure Simple Cooking: Effortless Meals Every Day
By Diana Henry
Ten Speed Press - 2009
I would consider this a quintessential fall dish, warming and hearty. The cider cooks down and makes a slightly sweet glaze that's very good. I did brown the sausages first, which cuts down on the baking time, and I also used regular cider instead of hard cider, with no detrimental effects.

A very simple recipe, good for a weeknight and easy to adapt. Homey one-dish meal. I like to brown the chicken on top of the stove first so that the skin gets really crispy.

Surprisingly good. I changed this recipe a lot. I thought the proportions were way off. I greatly reduced the amount of dressing to just a thin coating; also reduced the amount of bacon and smoked salad, and I cut out the green beans and watercress altogether. It was intended as a side dish, and I think it worked very well.

I make this recipe all the time. I always seem to have broccoli and sausages in the fridge. But it's very amenable to adaptations, or to just throwing in what you have on hand. This time I added roasted garlic--yum! Maybe that's why there's a version of it in almost all of my cookbooks.

This was fine but not great. I felt like the peas and prosciutto got a bit overcooked and colorless once they were added to the sauce, but the lemon flavor was very nice.
