By David Bowers

Beef and Barley Stew : page 78
Son and I enjoyed this one but hubby didn't like it. He does like another beef and barley stew I make with mushrooms. This one had potatoes, carrots and onions along with Guinness.

Beef and Guinness Stew : page 72
I made this one Sunday so I could reheat it tonight for our supper. Great to come home to a supper after work that I only had to heat up. I made a half recipe of this one to serve 4. I send a bowl home with my son in law last night along with a bowl of Korean soup with my daughter.
This stew had very few ingredients but was really good. The Brown Soda Bread was great for sopping up the juices.

Classic Brown Soda Bread : page 187
While I didn't care for the bread by itself it was delicious dipped in the Beef and Guinness Stew page 72. Perfect for a cold autumn night. I made this one Sunday for our Monday supper. Good to come home to a supper I only had to heat up.

Coddle : page 70
I requested this book from my local library. My daughter works at the library so they always give my holds to her. She made two recipes from this book before she brought it to me Mustard Chicken which I didn't get to taste but want to try and Coddle which she brought some to me when she brought me the book. Delicious!
It's like a thick potato soup on crack! My son in law doesn't care much for sausages and daughter couldn't find Irish Sausages any way so she omitted it.

Cottage or Shepherd's Pie : page 128
I wanted to make this an actual Shepherds pie but couldn't find ground lamb in my local market. Finding it is hit and miss here. I loved this version and used the option to add the cheese to the top by using some left over mashed potatoes that had lots of cheddar in them. I only had a small amount of those though and also used regular mashed potatoes and then topped with the cheese ones. I loved this but hubby only liked and son wouldn't eat it. He said it smelled like meat loaf and he doesn't like that. He also doesn't like green peas.
I checked this one out from the library but there are so many recipes I wanted to make I think I'll have to have my own copy. I have found quiet a few mistakes in this book but they're easy to work around and figure out.

Fish Cakes : page 88
The only kind of fish cakes I've ever had are Salmon patties. This was great. Loved the addition of boiled eggs and mashed potatoes along with the fish. Very tasty and filling.

Herb Stuffed Roast Chicken : page 142
The chicken was delicious as was the gravy but we didn't like the stuffing at all. I was missing sage but the stuffing tasted sweet to us. We couldn't figure out why since it was just bread crumbs, butter, parsley and thyme. I made this as part of my Dad's 84th birthday celebration.

Irish Pancakes : page 222
I filled these with apricot preserves and topped with confectioners sugar. Yum!

Old Fashioned Spicy Gingerbread : page 200
While I enjoyed this one it wasn't as good as some other recipes I've tried. To be fair to the recipe though my molasses were a bit old and I was out of cloves. It was still good and maybe these things caused it not to be up to par.
