About me: I love cooking, I love eating, I love discovering new recipes. I have so many cookbooks I sometimes lose track of which recipe is where - though this site helps a bit. I have gone low-carb in 2010, so that's different recipes to explore again. This also means I may not agree with my own reviews anymore if they were written in 2009 or before. ------------------ I have a lovely husband and ten-year old twins who also love eating. ----------------- You can also find me on LibraryThing, BookMooch and EatYourBooks, using the same handle.

Daond Pasha (Meatballs with Pine Nuts and Tomatoes) from The Complete Meze Table

The meatballs were very tasty, but I did not really like putting all the pine nuts together - it made for fussy cooking and I think I would prefer finding a pine nut here and there instead of finding them... read more >

Sophie Grigson's Sunshine Food

By Sophie Grigson
BBC Books - 2000

Very tasty, easy, cheap, vegetarian. It's one of those dishes I've got several recipes of, but this one has a nice depth of flavor as it's got a slightly longer ingredient list. Still not much work at all, still not expensive at all, so do go through the trouble of making this and see how it is a lot better than the student mishmash it could be in a more simplified version.

I used canned tomatoes. I served it with bulgur, but I suspect rice, bread, or plain or mashed potatoes would be better.

Fusilli al zucotto con rosmarino : page 100

Nice enough pasta dish.

Griddled (or barbecued) squid with basil and tomato sauce : page 120

Griddling the squid was very nice and quite straightforward. The tomato sauce was very good, giving the dish a very sunny feel.

Limoncello : page 195

This does make a pretty good limoncello, using wodka a a base. It does take at least 5 weeks though.

Moroccan orange salad : page 171

This is a very good combination of flavors, and it looks spectacular without being a lot of work.

Next time I will add only orange flower water and dates before chilling. Then it's possible to mix in the orange flower water well - I find it very hard to drizzle it evenly. The dates can also soften up a bit like that. The rest can be added just before serving.

Seared or grilled tuna with chermoula : page 116

This was a very nice marinade. Don't forget to add all of it to the pan, as it gets even nicer when it is grilled along with the fish. I did think the cooking times given were a bit long.

Disappointing. The taste was rather bland, and the recommended mushroom sauce only succeeded in reminding me of being vegetarian in the eighties.

Socca : page 32

A lovely vegan omelette/pancake. Serve with drinks, or with soup or a salad as a light meal.

If you've ever had to buy a big bag of chickpea flour because you needed half a cup in a recipe, this is the recipe to use up the rest.

In the photo fennel seeds were used instead of rosemary. Also very good.

Spinach frittata with mascarpone : page 78

Very nice, but not more than that.
I did not feel the mascarpone added much. Maybe I will try the tomato sauce next time.

Strawberries with mint and rose water : page 171

The rose water and mint really give strawberries a lift. Very easy to make, as well.

White cabbage salad : page 50

When I read the recipe I thought it used way too much salt, and I was right. While this recipe does need to be well-salted, half the amount given is plenty.
Apart from that, it is as lovely as Sophie says: bright and clean and invigorating.
