About me: I love cooking, I love eating, I love discovering new recipes. I have so many cookbooks I sometimes lose track of which recipe is where - though this site helps a bit. I have gone low-carb in 2010, so that's different recipes to explore again. This also means I may not agree with my own reviews anymore if they were written in 2009 or before. ------------------ I have a lovely husband and ten-year old twins who also love eating. ----------------- You can also find me on LibraryThing, BookMooch and EatYourBooks, using the same handle.

Daond Pasha (Meatballs with Pine Nuts and Tomatoes) from The Complete Meze Table

The meatballs were very tasty, but I did not really like putting all the pine nuts together - it made for fussy cooking and I think I would prefer finding a pine nut here and there instead of finding them... read more >

On Rice: 60 Fast and Easy Toppings That Make the Meal

By Rick Rodgers, Frankie Frankeny
Chronicle Books - 1997

26th September 2009 (edited: 9th June 2010)

calamari puttanesca : page 48

Strong-flavored mediterranean seafood. Maybe a tad salty, even without any added salt.

I made this with mixed seafood instead of just squid, which is nice too.

moroccan tagine : page 124

This wasn't bad at all, but there are so many other things you could do with the same ingredients that are a lot better (such as roasting them). I probably won't make it again.

Very good. No big surprises, but a good combination of sunny flavors. Easy & fast to make.

smoked pork chops with beer-braised cabbage : page 100

This was quite good. Hearty winter fare. But I do think it is in the wrong cookbook, as I'm pretty sure it would be better with mashed potatoes, or with buttered noodles, than it was with rice.

spinach and chick peas in spiced yogurt : page 114

Nice easy aromatic vegetarian meal.

Szechuan spicy eggplant : page 110

This does taste quite 'Chinese'. I wasn't very taken with boiling instead of frying the eggplant, but my husband was.

Next time I will egg-fry the rice going with this.

This one is quite hot, and the hotness is unevenly distributed: the mushrooms get very hot, but the chicken not so much. I'm not sure I like that. I would also only just wilt the basil, not cook it.
Apart from that, a good bastardization of Thai kitchen.
Don't reheat, the basil doesn't like that.

Tuna bouillabaisse : page 51

This did nothing for me. It tasted well, but there was nothing special or even particular about the taste. Won't bother with this again.
