Very similar but quite a bit nicer than the sautéed (or boiled?) cauliflower with a layer of breadcrumbs that I used to eat as a kid. Unfortunately, quite a bit more work as well. It's a bit unfortunate that Bittman doesn't give any indication whatsoever...

My daughter chose the Rich version of this mac and cheese for part of her birthday supper 2015. We loved the sauteed mushrooms in this but it was a bit dry. It called for Parmesan and mascarpone cheese (which I couldn't find so subbed cream cheese)....

Easy to make and quite yummy. I used the optional rum. Once you've done something with filo/phyllo, you realize it's really pretty easy to turn out something that looks like it took a lot more effort than it really did. There are a couple of variations...
